Did you know that adding 800 lbs makes your car slower?

I know that, in theory, adding weight reduces your power-to-weight ratio, but I never really experienced it firsthand until now. Last night, I drove my sister and her 4 friends (one girl, three guys) to a party. I used my 07' Audi A4 2.0T Quattro (two people in the passenger seat, three in the back). Not including me, that's about 800 lbs of weight for the little 2.0 liter engine to carry. I live in a hilly part of New England, and I really felt the Audi struggling to pull itself up some of the steeper inclines. I had to keep the revs around 3000 to get any appreciable acceleration, which was unnerving since I typically drive around in a high gear at less than 2000 rpm, and upshift before 3000 rpm.

After this experience, I have much more appreciation for !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Their "fully loaded" 0-60 tests give a valuable real-world idea of performance by stuffing a generously proportioned person in each seat and recording how long it takes to haul that weight to 60 mph. Similarly, they are stationed in Denver, and repeatedly demonstrate just how much altitude compromises an engine's performance.

Yeah it usually catches people off guard how much the weight makes a difference. Not trying to be rude by why are you putting 2 people in a passenger seat? That's pretty much as unsafe as it gets since there's no seatbelt use.

There were 6 people including me, and 5 seats. The passenger seat seemed a safer alternative to stuffing someone in the trunk with the folding pong table. My sister and the other girl were small enough to fit together in the front passenger seat, and the three guys were big enough to completely fill the rear three seats.

I think the safer alternative was the biggest person goes in the passenger seat with a seatbelt on and have the 2 girls sit on each other's laps. That's what I've done in a crunch before.

People used to think I was crazy but every Autocross I go to I ask to have a passenger. It makes a noticeable difference in the handling.

Yep. They always remind viewers that their 0-60 times are slow because they were conducted a mile above sea level. They love reviewing forced induction engines because they don't suffer as much from the altitude.

My alternative would be the biggest person in the front and the 2 girls sit on each other's laps. If they aren't cool with it then there's no more space, I'm not going to stick people mad people in the front, this ain't the 70s.

I know, it happened to mee all the time in my lame and ugly seat ibiza. Not anymore no, in my Mustang, that sucker can pull anything. I might as well put a towing(thing) and tow a car on a trailer.

If I'm driving spiritedly, I will rev. For everyday driving, I see no need to do so. Also, my previous car was an E46 330xi that barely managed 20 mpg, so I find it fun beating that number in my more efficient A4.

Here's how I look at it, if some drunk asshole or douchbag dudebro rear ends me at a high speed one of the passengers is going through that windshield and their parents will never forgive me.
